A Ball State University men's volleyball highlight came up short for the national play of the year.
Outside attacker Larry Wrather's match-winning block against then-No. 3 Cal State Northridge University lost to a kill from a University of Hawai'i player for the American Volleyball Coaches Association Men's Play of the Year.
About 2,000 people voted in the week-long online poll on the AVCA website that closed Thursday. Final voting results were not released, but as of Wednesday night Wrather's block was in last place with about 6 percent of the total vote.
The Ball State play was one of the three finalists for the award.
The play of the year winner was Hawai'i outside attacker Joshua Walker's kill that hit off a UC Irvine player's head and went into the stands. The other finalist featured a player diving into press row from a match between New Jersey City University and City Tech University.
Wrather's solo block completed a sweep against the Matadors in March at Worthen Arena. It was the first time the Cardinals defeated a top-five ranked team in 11 years.
This was the inaugural year of the AVCA Play of the Year.
Throughout the season people could submit a video highlight from a high school or college match to be considered for the men's play of the week and play of the year.
