BSU students audition for 2nd season of hit show 'Glee'

Edric Mitchell's dream has always been to perform on Broadway, but if he gets the opportunity to appear on a popular television show, he'll see himself as a success.

Mitchell, a sophomore theatre education major, and freshman David Johnson each submitted audition videos to appear on the Fox television show "Glee" last month. The winners of the competition will appear in the second season of the show.

The show held open auditions on MySpace, where people auditioning could submit a video monologue and a video of themselves singing a capella.

Mitchell and Johnson both submitted videos of themselves singing "Lean on Me," which they thought would be a good match for their voices.

"I know my voice and I thought that song would complement it the most," Mitchell said. "Part of it was also though because of the way [the cast] sang the song on the show. The lyrics are really powerful."

Mitchell said his dream to be on Broadway started when he was in the second grade. He's taken voice lessons and has been heavily involved with choirs and theatrical shows over the years.

Johnson isn't new to performing, either. He is a member of University Singers and has been in numerous plays, including High School Musical at the Muncie Civic Theatre this spring. He has also auditioned for shows like "Survivor" on CBS and the children's show "Endurance" on the Discovery Kids cable network when he was 14 years old.

Johnson said he enjoys the attention that being in the spotlight brings.

"I like to entertain people and I like it when they enjoy it," he said. "I like to be on the stage, whether it's a physical stage or one I make up."

Johnson said even though he isn't a "Glee" fanatic or a "Gleek," winning a role on the show would mean a lot to him.

"I think it would represent and exemplify something finally happening for me," he said. "I've done enough auditions where rejection has been present. It's something I've worked toward for so long, and to finally succeed would be a great feeling of accomplishment."

Mitchell echoed the feelings of accomplishment.

"Winning a role would mean I was getting closer to the dream I've always wanted," he said.

Having a role on "Glee" would be a little like surpassing his dreams of Broadway, Mitchell said.

"I wanted to be on Broadway, but not everyone is going to know about it or see something on Broadway," he said. "The is a national television show that people would see. It would just be crazy if it actually happened."
