4 reports filed for theft from vehicles

The Ball State University Police Department found four suspects stealing from unlocked cars in the Scheumann Stadium parking lot early Sunday morning.

Four individuals have filed theft reports, but UPD believes dozens of vehicles may have been entered, according to a public safety notice e-mailed to students Monday morning.

Gene Burton, director of Public Safety, said the four suspects have been taken into custody, and more than 100 electronic devices that had been stolen from unlocked vehicles were found in the suspects' vehicle.

"It's not unusual to have theft on a college campus, but it is unusual to have that high a number," he said.

Other locations visited by the group include neighborhoods north of Fraternity Row, the McKinley Avenue parking garage, the H-4 parking lot east of DeHority Complex and the R-2 lot south of LaFollette Complex.

In the e-mail, Burton urges students who parked in these locations over the weekend to check their vehicles and report any missing items to Detective Reba Grass at 765-284-3741.

"Our big concern is that we won't get the victims identified and their property back to them before the end of the semester," Burton said. "That's why the public safety notice was sent."
