University Council appoints new executive board

At 4 p.m. every Thursday, Laura Helms is at a governance meeting, either leading it, giving a presentation or sitting in the crowd as a ex-officio member.

Helms, associate dean of University College, said she was sad to step down from her position as chairwoman of University Council, but she won't complain about having her Thursday afternoons free.

"I really do enjoy the governance interaction across divisions," Helms said. "They're generally a congenial bunch of people."

She said she's happy with the progress that has been made, especially with the issue of restructuring governance committees. Faculty Council will vote on this item at its first meeting in the fall.

"My job [as associate dean of University College] is to carry out the policies the governance system creates, and I'd rather help create policies than just implement them," she said.

There were two meetings Thursday. The first was a regular meeting, and the second was a short meeting to determine next year's executive board.

During the first meeting, policies for the School of Extended Education courses were the main point of discussion.

Joanna Wallace, dean of the School of Extended Education, gave a presentation about the document and council members posed questions. Wallace said the School of Extended Education doesn't have anything to do with on-campus learning, and so one item of the document was changed to reflect this.

A previous version of the item stated that on campus students may not take independent learning or contract courses online. The new version stated students who are incarcerated in a Department of Corrections facility will be subject to the approval of the prison program director.

"We have no dog in this fight," Wallace said, referring to the notion of penalizing on campus students for taking courses online.

Other items of the document were also discussed, and University Council moved to send it back to the Extended Education Committee for revision.

In the second meeting, Barb Wills, Katie Slabaugh and Cynthia Marini were named as the executive officers for 2010-2011.

2010-2011 executive officers:
Chairwoman: Barb Wills, Technology Training specialist
Vice chairwoman: Katie Slabaugh, assistant to the vice president for Student Affairs
Secretary: Cynthia Marini, assistant director of Academic Advising
