Last week, unforgiving weather at Purdue kept the Ball State University track and field team from completing all events. It was a complete reversal of conditions in Oxford, Ohio on Saturday.

Under sunny skies and a steady breeze, Ball State finished third at the 25th annual Miami Invitational.

The host RedHawks won the meet with 188 points, with Hillsdale (Mich.) College finishing second with 98 points and Grand Valley State tying with Ball State for third, posting 88 points.

Junior Thekla Lorenz had another outstanding performance for Ball State, accounting for 22 points in individual events. Lorenz won the long jump event, posting a length of 5.73 meters. She also finished second in the javelin throw with a toss of 38.51 meters and fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.88 seconds).

Senior Jenna Schmitmeyer also had a solid individual performance, posting 11 points. Schmitmeyer finished second in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.12) and sixth in the 400 meter dash (58.19 seconds).

Both Lorenz and Schmitmeyer helped accumulate more points for Ball State on the 4x400 meter relay team (3:50.40), along with senior Katie Johnson and sophomore Renyae Owsley.

Ball State posted eight overall top-three finishes. Owsley finished second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.31 and freshman Judah Smith finished third with a time of 57.65. Senior Ali Bishel finished third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:27.32 and Johnson finished third in the 100 meter hurdles (14.50).

Next weekend, the track and field teams will travel to the University of Louisville for the UL Invitational.
