Students create lesson plans for Ind. historical sites

Ball State University students have been working this semester to assist teachers across the state in educating their students about certain historical sites in Indiana.

Chase Gervais, Jared Stites and Moises Fairchild have been filling orders for lesson plans and curriculums from organizations including the Indiana State Museum, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana and Wayne County History Museum.

Ronald Morris, a professor of history who has headed the project for the past eight years, said he is excited about the work being done for the landmarks in the community.

"These students have been proving through these projects that they are truly professionals and ready to be educators," he said.

The historic organizations plan to use the lessons to help teachers make learning more exciting at these historic sites.

Gervais, who has been working on the project for almost four months, said he hopes the work he does will help make life easier for teachers.

"I hope that what our team creates will be used to connect what kids are learning in the classroom to historic sites in the community," he said. "We've been working hard all semester to get these things done."

Morris and the team of students presented their first completed project to the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana on Friday and are awaiting feedback.

Anne Fairchild, program manager at the Indiana State Museum, said she couldn't wait to see what kind of lesson plans students come up with.

"I expect the lesson plans to help make visits to the museum more meaningful for students," she said. "I think they will help students learn what they need to know."

Teachers interested in taking advantage of the project's curriculum should contact the historic site they are interested in.
