Staff Council to have food drive

Staff Council is holding a canned food drive for the next two weeks to help the Ball State University and Muncie communities.

Students and faculty may donate nonperishable food items at numerous locations starting today, Amanda Collins, Staff Council public relations chairwoman, said.

Collins said the council has held the food drive each of the past few years to contribute to Ball State and the Muncie area.

"We just wanted to give back to the community," she said. "I think it's always important to help the community because there are always people who can benefit from it."

The donations will be sent to the Salvation Army, which is in desperate need of supplies, Collins said. She said the donations would help ensure that people who need food will have access to it.

"We donate to the Salvation Army because they're open to any person in Delaware County," she said.

Staff Council held a food drive in December and received more than 1,500 donations, Collins said.

"That was our biggest drive ever," she said. "It would be nice to get at least that again because it's always nice to go above and beyond."

Collins said part of the reason the last one was successful may have been because it was around Christmas. She said she hopes student involvement will help make this drive a success.

"We've focused on faculty donating in the past, and I think it's a great idea to get students involved because they can help just as much as staff and faculty," she said.

Staff Council is accepting nonperishable food items like canned food, cooking oil, canned meat and flour.

Donation boxes are located in offices throughout the campus, including the Frank A. Bracken Administration Building, Alumni Center and Bracken Library.

The food drive ends April 16.
