Mr., Ms. Ball State pumps up crowd

Months of training and dieting paid off for the Ball State University students that competed at this year's Mr. and Ms. Ball State body building competition.

But at the end of the competition, senior exercise science major Josh York and junior child life specialist major Kailly Fisher received the titles of Mr. and Ms. Ball State.

The competitors, both men and women, went through mandatory poses, lining up in front of the judges and following their orders.

After doing their mandatory poses each competitor was given 60 seconds to pose or dance for the audience. Some of the competitors use their minute to dance and lift cheers from the crowd.

Josh Kosier, who won first place in the large build men division, brought his Iron Man mask and "arc reactor" and wore them to do his poses.

Fisher danced to some jazz with a walking stick while doing poses as well.

While some in the crowd were friends and family cheering on their favorite, some others were seeing a body building competition for the first time.

For freshman telecommunications major Alaine Whitmire it was her first time watching a body building competition. She decided to go because a friend told her about it.

"I really didn't know what to expect. I like it because there are a lot of hot guys," Whitmire said, laughing. "It's just interesting, I guess I just didn't expect guys our age to be that buff."

Although this was the first time freshman telecommunications major Griffin Corn saw a body building competition before, he said he knew it was going to be good because he knew some of the competitors.

"I think it's a great way for these guys to show their hard work," he said. "I saw most of these guys in the gym. I work out but not nearly as much as they do."

The competition was a first time experience for many of the participants, including Fisher. Albert Snyder-Case, another competitor, said it was the first time competing in a body building competition as well.

He said a friend talked him into taking part in the competition.

"At first I was a little hesitant about wearing a posing trunk in front of everybody, but I got past that," he said.

As the judges announced the winners for this year's competition the crowd cheered and asked for the competitors to pose again. Friends were already holding cupcakes and sweets to greet their competitors.

For Fisher, working hard and pushing herself earned her a first place in the women's division. She said she was not expecting to win.

"[Dieting and working out] is all really hard but at the end it's awesome," she said.

Although dieting was difficult, Fisher said her boyfriend helped her eat the right food.

"He was eating the same stuff I was and he's a really good cook so he cooked a lot of the meals for me, so that helped," she said.

When Josh York was announced as this year's Mr. Ball State, he grabbed his sword — which is given to the overall men's division winner every year — and held it up so everyone in the audience could see it. Friends and family cheered while they raised signs with "Go York!" on them.

After putting some pants and a shirt on, York said he was planning to go celebrate his friends and eat what he couldn't in the last few months.

"I feel calm, satisfied, the last two weeks were pretty awful, I'm glad I came out of that," he said. "But at the end it paid off."
