Despite missing two of its all-conference starters, the Lewis University men's volleyball team was able to get a victory to remain ahead of Ball State University in the conference standings.
Without injured starting setter Mike Iandolo and starting outside attacker Nathan Klaas, Lewis swept IPFW 31-29, 30-24, 31-29 on Wednesday in Romeoville, Ill.
This is the third match Iandolo has missed because of an undisclosed injury. The senior and 2009 First Team All-Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association selection is fifth in the MIVA with an 11.76 assists per game average.
Klaas, a preseason all-conference selection, has missed the last two matches after playing in all three games and having a match-high 13 kills in a victory against Quincy University on Friday.
The Flyers (16-7, 5-3 MIVA) finished their match against the Mastodons with a .391 attack percentage — more than .100 percentage points above its season average. Lewis also had three players with at least 10 kills, including freshman Ian Karbiener, who had a match-high 15 kills.
With this victory, Lewis remains one match ahead of Ball State (13-8, 4-4 MIVA) for third place in the MIVA. In addition, IPFW (9-13, 2-7 MIVA) falls to sixth place and is a half-match behind Quincy for fifth.
In the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals, the No. 3 seed hosts the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed hosts the No. 5 seed on April 24.
After its match against No. 9 Penn State University on Thursday, Ball State will play road matches against IPFW on Saturday and Lewis on Tuesday. If the Cardinals are able to take both of these conference matches — and Quincy loses one of its four remaining MIVA contests — Ball State will clinch the No. 4 seed.
