The members of P.O.N.S. originally got together in 2008 with a lineup that included eight drummers. In 2010, that number dwindled down to one and the official lineup for self-proclaimed "Electric Psych-Warriors," P.O.N.S. was created.
The group consists of Jacob Gardner on guitar and vocals, Adam Gross on drums and guitar and Daniel Sansone on bass, with occasional auxiliary drummers.
Gardner describes Gross as the Simon to his Garfunkel. The two work closely together in creating the expansion of their music, in volume and music. The music rattles between soothing guitar licks to sporadic screaming and grunge-esque yelps exemplified in their song, "Dirty Kids Reprise" from their split with the band Prim.
Lyrically, the band paints a picture as poignant as their musical screams. Gardner's favorite lyrics are derived from the song "Strange Fruit," by Billie Holiday and Gardner writes with the same sort of detail poet Abel Meeropol utilized in the song, which became a hit for Holiday.
"A yellowed kitchen in a small inner city with deep bass sticking to the walls on the other side of them / a glimpse of Santa Claus with a green Texas Hold'em muscle shirt on / And a quick wink turned sterling in the morning blue glow / Brown painting fisherman with military motorcycles and opposite sounding voices / that pierce the electric hum of the harbor lights in the early morning," writes Gardener and Gross in the song, "Closet Mouth."
Just like "Strange Fruit," Gardner adds historical content to his music and performance. P.O.N.S.'s live show features a companion film that will be shown for the second time during the band's performance at Village Green Records.
"The music is actually based around the film we've made. It's about introducing a new system of thought," Gardener said. "The way the Americas were colonized was the basis for that. The way it was written down in history is horrible. We're not a political band by any means; the film is actually more about how someone would cope with that. The whole thing is a loose metaphor so that people could take it however they see it."
P.O.N.S appearance at Record Store Day will kick-off the first mini-tour for the band. The group hopes to begin recording soon and releasing their tracks on vinyl.
