Indiana chief justice to receive national award

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's chief justice will receive a national award for judicial excellence this week.

The Indiana Supreme Court says the American Judicature Society will present Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard with the Dwight D. Opperman Award for Judicial Excellence on Wednesday at a judicial education conference in Indianapolis.

Shepard was chosen by a panel of judges from New York, California and Colorado.

The Des Moines, Iowa-based society says Shepard is recognized as a national authority on judicial ethics and legal professionalism.

The former Vanderburgh Superior Court judge was appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court in 1985 and was named chief justice 18 months later at age 38.

At the time, he was the nation's youngest chief justice.
