Greek Week picnic tonight

With spring already here, Ball State University's Greek Life will take advantage of the warm air with a community picnic at University Green.

The "Are you Afraid of the Dark?" Community Picnic begins at 7 p.m.. The picnic will include pizza, breadsticks and drinks provided by the Greek Week Steering Committee, and team members are in charge of the desserts.

The dessert competition asks each team to bring a dessert to share with all attendees and also to be judged by Greek Week Steering Committee. Winners will receive points for their team. But the event gets even more exciting after dusk.

Once the sun goes down, participants will be able to hang out around a bonfire and cook s'mores. The local band Dreams of University will perform starting around 7 p.m.

As the end of Greek Week's Greek-elodeon "Get Your Slime On" approaches, steering committee member Alex Perdue thought the picnic was a good idea to bring everyone together.

"We wanted a picnic on campus so non-greek's can come and we can all get together and enjoy pizza and music," he said.

Kelsey DeWees, events coordinator for Greek Life, said the event is different than others held this week because it is a relaxed environment where everyone can get to know each other.

"The picnic is a laid-back time," she said. "We have a band but there isn't a competition so it allows time to relax and meet people."

Perdue said in past years Greek Week included a potluck at each different greek house where members would not have much time to enjoy the atmosphere.

"Now we are creating conversation," he said. "It is important to let other people know what greek life is about."
