Ball State receives $170,000 grant

The Indiana Department of Education has awarded Ball State University $174,167, through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers 2009-2010 grant competition.

Ball State was one of 52 institutions to receive funding across the state.

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program awards grants to public school districts, community-based organizations, public and private organizations, faith-based organizations or a grouping of these organizations, according to a press release, in order to provide communities opportunities to establish or expand community learning centers.

These learning centers provide students with academic enrichment opportunities in order to meet state and local student performance standards within the core curriculum.

This year, the applications were highly competitive with the largest amount of requests for grants to date.

Across Indiana, $12.4 million was funded to the grantees, with $24 million requested.

The highest amount awarded was $450,000 to both Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township in Indianapolis.
