Phi Delta Theta fraternity members Alec Brenneman, Jeff Doran and Joe Spear took home the award for "Best Greek Chili" on Friday at the 9th annual Cardinal Chili Challenge.
"Alpha Tau Omega (fraternity) won last year so it feels good to win in our first year competing," Brenneman said.
The team's chili was a family recipe from Brenneman's mom and they added extra spices to give it enough kick to win. The group also won various door prizes during the raffle including gift certificates and a 6-inch sub from Subway.
"It's a little chilly out but we're having so much fun," Doran said.
Shively's team, "Chili con Cardinal," also won an award for having the best "Residence Hall Chili." Team members Bella Diloretto and Carla Buckles attributed their chili's success to the unique flavors of cinnamon and cloves that they added.
"People really liked the cinnamon, it gave the chili a sweetness that they weren't expecting," Diloretto said. "It went well with the saltiness of the chips that were provided."
"The Donner Party" didn't have as good of luck as the other teams but the members said they still had a great day.
"We added Honey Lager to our chili for a more unique taste but it didn't satisfy the judges," Eric Wyman said.
Matt Stinnott said the group was going to compete next year in the hopes that they can win the "Spiciest Chili" award.
"The whole thing was a blast and you can never beat a free lunch," said Jon Dilk.
