WOMEN'S GOLF: Record round earns Ball State third place after 1st day at UNLV

Cain sets career best by shooting 69 in first round

Not even 24 hours after finishing its first tournament of the Spring Season, the Ball State University women's golf team has started off the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Spring Rebel Invitational in Boulder City, Nev., with a bang.

Tied for third place with the University of Missouri, Ball State set a school record by shooting a combined 289 in the first round. The record was the best 18-hole team score in Ball State history. This record beats the previous one of 294 set three years ago during the 2007-08 Mid-American Conference Preview in Speedway, Ind.

Host UNLV leads the tournament with a first-round score of 281 and the University of Idaho sits in second with a score of 285.

Ball State's Kristtani Cain set a career-best with a score of 69 in the first round and is tied for fourth place, while junior Brittany Kelly is tied for 17th and tied her season low with a first-round score of 72.

Freshman Chantelle Hefer carded a 74 and is tied for 29th, as well as Rachael Pruett.

Kristy O'Conner ended the first round with a 75 and tied for 44th place while teammate Katie Windlan is competing as an individual in this tournament and finished the first round in 93rd place with an 89.
