Prior to Saturday's Muncie Gras festivities, Village Green Records will host a free, all-ages show. The line-up includes The Bonesetters, Joel Levi and the Indianapolis-based band Holy Ghost Canyon.
"I'm excited to have The Bonesetters come back," said Travis Harvey, owner of Village Green Records. "[Levi is] yet another artist we've seen change and evolve their sound through out the past few years. The record store has always been a foundation and venue for us to see that change in these artists. It's kind of like a homecoming with The Bonesetters and Joel Levi."
The Bonesetters and Levi have become Muncie favorites in the music circuit. The Bonesetters were recently voted the third best Muncie band through Doc's Music Hall's Battle of the Bands.
Holy Ghost Canyon has gained popularity through the Indianapolis circuit, becoming a favorite at Indianapolis venues like Big Car Gallery, Debbie's House and The Vollrath Tavern. Holy Ghost Canyon was featured on Indianapolis National Public Radio and has opened for national touring bands like Jeffrey Lewis, Deer Tick and These United States.
The band hosts members from other popular Indianapolis bands including Jascha, Amo Joy and America Owns the Moon.
The sound of Holy Ghost Canyon twists and turns between old country and desert folk. Lead singer Adam Kuhn's voice adds a certain sense of disparity to Holy Ghost Canyon's vintage sound. The music is reminiscent of The Avett Brothers and Bob Dylan with the same sort of longing found in the blues music created by Blind Melon Jefferson in the 1920s. Kuhn said his influences include country artists, Merle Haggard and Gram Parsons.
"The songs are about being alive in the worst kind of ways, not really being depressed but just the tough times I've had," Kuhn said. "It's just an easy way for me to put some of my fears to rest."
Holy Ghost Canyon will soon begin recording its first LP at Queensize Studio in Indianapolis, owned by former Margot and the Nuclear So-and-So's member Andy Fry. After the release of their album, Holy Ghost Canyon plans on hitting the tour trail through the Mid-West and East Coast regions.
