FORT WAYNE, Ind. — In its second game of the spring season, Ball State University took on Indiana State University, but it was for more than just soccer.
The Cardinals took down the Sycamores, 1-0, at the fifth annual Spring Fling held at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Spring Fling donates all of its admission earnings to Camp Watcha-Wanna-Do; a camp for children living with and surviving cancer.
The only scoring in the game came in the fifth minute when junior Missy Gordon sent a shot past sophomore goal keeper Emily Lahay that found the back of the net.
With the 1-0 victory, coach Craig Roberts is pleased with the progress his team has been making since he was hired last month.
"They are starting to get right mentality on what we need to do to have a successful season for next season," Roberts said. "Our goal is to improve on last practice, last game performance. What we have addressed they have taken steps to improve in those areas."
Roberts also saw the Spring Fling event as a great event for the Cardinals to participate in.
"It's a great opportunity to give back to the community and give back at a charity event like this," Roberts said. "This will be something that will be shown in a positive manner."
Though Roberts was pleased with the strides his team has been making in the spring season, he believes they still have work to do before next season.
"We're still a ways off but we're making strides in right direction," Roberts said. "They're listening intently and they have good work ethics and good attitudes. If we keep combining those we're going to make some steps very quickly. I'm pleased with how quick they are progressing."
The Spring Fling featured six other teams: Saint Francis, University of Findlay, IPFW, University of Notre Dame, Michigan State University and Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green State University.
Ball State has two home games remaining on the spring schedule; the Alumni Game on April 17 and against Indiana Tech University on April 24.
