The "Stop Hate" banner is making a reappearance on Thursday.
The banner event, co-sponsored by the Social Justice League, will be available to sign from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on University Green.
An independent study by the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies showed that April had an increased amount of campus violence. Virginia Tech and Columbine High School shootings were both in mid-April.
Hopefully, this event gets students to think about the effect hateful actions and thoughts can have around the world and close to home.
Because if signing a banner isn't going to be what makes a difference, actions will.
Similar to joining Facebook groups such as "Amazing new way to lower gas prices!" or "SAY NO TO ANIMAL ABUSE!!!" or tweeting that you are ticked about Iran injustice, simply saying you are for or against something won't change anything.
It only makes you feel better about yourself.
We don't expect you to fight against every injustice or join every cause.
There is simply not enough time in an entire lifetime to right all the wrongs.
But, maybe this event will help students see that becoming involved in just one cause can be rewarding. Remember Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS shoes? He had an idea to help children get shoes, started a business and now works to make children's lives better.
Try volunteering with the Court Appointed Special Advocate program, Habitat for Humanity, Animal Rescue Fund, Boys and Girls' Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Harvest Soup Kitchen, the AngelWorx program with Lifestream Services or Meals on Wheels. These are only a few of your voluntary choices. They don't ask much — just a few hours a week.
Even donating blood at one of the various campus drives is better than signing your name and thinking you are actually accomplishing something.
Let this banner signing be your starting point. It is possible to make a big difference in a small way. And what better time to start than right now?
