MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Grand Canyon breaks streak, wins first MIVA match in team history

GCU victory improves Ball State's chances of getting MIVA Tournament quarterfinal home match

For the first time in its program history, the Grand Canyon University men's volleyball team won a conference match.

Grand Canyon defeated Quincy University 29-31, 31-29, 32-30, 30-18 Monday in Phoenix for its first victory in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.

This is the Antelopes first season in the MIVA after the Division II team played as an independent during the program's inaugural season in 2009.

After losing to Quincy (6-10, 2-5 MIVA) in five games on Sunday, Grand Canyon (12-18, 1-7 MIVA) entered the match on a seven-match conference losing streak. The MIVA losing streak included two loses to Ball State University earlier this season.

Grand Canyon outhit Quincy .220 to .135 and had three players with at least 10 kills, including outside attacker Brock Hutchins who had a match-high 21 kills.

With the victory, the Antelopes remain in last place but move to 1.5 matches out of fifth place. The win also guarantees that no MIVA team will go winless in conference play this season after Quincy went 0-10 during the 2009 season.

The loss moves Quincy back into a fifth-place tie with IPFW (8-9, 2-5 MIVA), and they are both 1.5 matches behind Ball State for fourth place. IPFW and Quincy have yet to play this season and will play a two-match series the final weekend of the regular season April 16 and 17 in Quincy, Ill.

In the MIVA Tournament, the regular-season champion will receive a bye in the quarterfinals and the teams that finish in second through fourth place will host a quarterfinal tournament match.

If the Cardinals (10-7, 4-4 MIVA) can clinch the No. 4 seed in their four remaining conference matches, they will play the No. 5 seed in the MIVA Tournament quarterfinals April 23 or April 24 at Worthen Arena. Ball State is a combined 4-1 against IPFW, Quincy and Grand Canyon this season with its one loss coming on the road at Quincy.
