INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has approved new teacher licensing rules requiring new public school teachers to hold degrees in the subject matter they will teach.
Daniels signed the new rules Tuesday, three months after a state panel approved them amid criticism from college educators who said they would not improve the quality of the state's teachers.
The new rules include a requirement that people teaching grades 5 through 12 earn baccalaureate degrees in the subjects they teach. The earlier rules qualified people holding an education degree alone for an Indiana teaching license to teach those grades.
Daniels said the new rules mean that from now on, all Indiana teachers will know the subject they are teaching. The rules also will allow people in other careers to move more easily into teaching.
