Half of $15.2 million in budget cuts to affect faculty

Ball State University officials found the $15.2 million dollars they needed to cut from the university budget in the pockets of faculty and staff.

At the second campus forum, held today in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom, University Treasurer Randy Howard announced $7.8 million would be cut from salary and benefits.

He said there will be cuts in benefits, but a modest increase in salaries, amounting to a two percent increase for faculty and staff, excluding non-instructional staff who make above market wage.

Laura Helms, chairperson of University Council, said she was impressed by how comprehensive the university's plan is.

"I was concerned. You're always concerned," she said. "But you can't argue with comparable data."

Regarding healthcare, Ball State's Low Deductible Plan and out-of-network deductibles are the lowest among public state universities.

Small fee increases seemed to be the only areas that would affect students, including an $30 fee for each graduate credit hour and a $25 graduation application fee.
