Mayor Sharon McShurley announced that she would commit $15,000 to support Muncie Downtown Development Partnerhip. The announcement was made at a recent Downtown Development board meeting.
McShurley said in her announcement she believed the image of downtown Muncie is important for the its economic development.
"As I meet with companies considering Muncie an energized downtown sends a positive signal about our community," she said.
Downtown Development has worked to support local businesses through marketing, such as organizing events and cleaning the downtown area.
Chairperson of Downtown Development Jim Borgmann said after the announcement he thought the financial support from the city would be helpful in the "growth and success of Muncie and all Delaware county."
"It is important to take advantage of the existing momentum and excitement downtown, as a vibrant downtown has economic and recreational benefits for the entire County," he said.
The Muncie Downtown Development Partnership is funded with a combination of grants, sponsorships, event revenue and membership fees, accoroding to a press release.
