Travel opportunity information meeting today

Students looking for alternative ways to earn credits in other countries can learn more at informational meetings today.

International Student Volunteers will have informational meetings every hour today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 303 for volunteer study programs around the world.

Through this program, groups of students from all over the world will travel to Australia, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Thailand and Eastern Europe.

Kim Davey, ISV American campus representative, said students can earn credit depending on what they are studying and whether it is approved with their teachers.

Most trips will last one month, but they can range from two weeks to three months, she said. The first two weeks are spent doing volunteer work either with social community development or conservation. Social community development involves things like improving the quality of impoverished villages, building homes for refugees and teaching children English. Conservation involves things such as ecosystem rehabilitation and environmental education.

The second half of the trip is spent on recreational activities such as white water rafting, scuba diving, snorkeling, cave exploration, horseback riding and other activities pertinent to the country where students will be studying.

"It will change [students'] views on every part of their lives and allow them to make a difference in the world they'd never dreamed of," Davey said.

ISV is a non-profit organization, and financial assistance for students is available.
