TRACK: Cardinals currently 8th through first day of MAC Indoor Championships

Lorenz accounts for 6 points for Ball State

Through day one of the Mid-American Conference indoor track and field championships in Mount Pleasant, Mich., Ball State University finds itself in a tough spot.

After five events scored, the Cardinals are going into Saturday's finals with 11 points, good enough for eighth place.

Junior Thekla Lorenz is one of three scorers for the team, accounting for six points after placing third in the pentathlon with a score of 3,771. Senior Vanessa Gilbert added four points of her own after finishing fifth in the 5k race with a time of 17:31.99.

The distance medley team of junior Brittany Ade, senior Jenna Schmitmeyer, sophomore Christine Talhem and freshman MaryKate Mellen accounted for one point after finishing eighth with a time of 12:08.42.

Junior Ra'Jae Marable and senior Katie Johnson qualified for Saturday's final in the 60-meter hurdles. Marable ran an 8.63 while Johnson clocked in at 8.70 in the preliminaries.

The championships are slated to resume at 1:30 p.m. with the high jump and shot put.
