SGA to have first Make an Impact Day

Cardinal Impact is finishing up its Student Government Association slate with a service project to bring together Ball State University and the Muncie community.

SGA Secretary Carson Lance said the group is teaming up with LifeStream Services to organize the inaugural Make an Impact Day in Muncie. Lifestream Services is a non-profit organization that offers services, products and help for local people who are risk of losing their independence.

During the event Feb. 27, students will work on outdoor projects to help low-income elderly people in the community. Students will work in small groups from 10 a.m. to noon window washing, clearing walkways, washing cars and cleaning barns.

The service project is a platform item for Cardinal Impact. Lance said the slate got the idea for Make an Impact Day from similar projects such as the Boiler Blast at Purdue University. He said the next SGA slate isn't obligated to participate next year, but he hopes it will.

Tara Gerber at LifeStream said the organization has arranged 15 projects so far, and it hopes to double that number in the next few weeks. She said SGA has an overall goal of arranging 50 to 100 projects across the city.

"There's definitely a need in Muncie, and I hope we continue doing projects like this," Gerber said. "We appreciate that the university wants to partner with us."

Lance said he hopes various organizations at Ball State will get involved in the project. Even though the weather may not be ideal for outdoor projects, he said it was the last weekend they could do something before the next slate for SGA takes office.

"This is our last big hoorah," he said. "I pray the weather is fantastic and we get a heat wave coming through."
