AT ISSUE: Muncie Gras organizers should have waited a few more days before postponing event

We were here, just a few days ago, singing Muncie's praises.

Alongside the growing art and culture scene, there are various events the Muncie community can look forward to each year: RibFest, Freaky Tiki Fridays, ArtsWalk, Muncie MusicFest.

So, in a city with weather as unpredictable as Muncie, it came as a bit of a shock when the annual merrymaking festival of Muncie Gras was postponed early last week until March 20 ... due to snow.

The organizers jumped the gun a little bit. Bad weather should be expected; it is going to be trouble when you organize an outdoor event in February in the Midwest.

Organizers blamed the snow already on the ground, as well as the forecasted weekend weather. But anyone who's lived in Muncie for more than a week would tell you to never trust an Indiana weather report. It can be sunny and warm in the morning and then suddenly drop 20 degrees in the afternoon and turn into monsoon season, and the 10-day forecast almost never pans out.

The forecasted weather for Saturday was snow. However, it was actually quite clear in the evening, and temperatures were in the 20s and 30s. Not bad for Muncie in February. In years past, Muncie Gras was held in 17-degree weather (2006) and consistently falling snow (2007).

On Valentine's Day, a cleanup and snow removal group effort called "Spread the Love, Clean the Streets," was held downtown to clear the piles of packed snow. While some snow had fallen in the week following, the streets weren't bad by any standards this past weekend.

It's understandable that organizers were worried about people's safety. One can imagine the scores of scantily clad revelers slipping and sliding over frost-covered pavement. But, maybe, instead of canceling the event on the Tuesday before, the postponement could've been postponed itself. A few more days of waiting and it's likely that forecast will change anyway. And it did.

This could've ended up being a great weekend for the festivities. Oops.
