Nomination Convention set for Monday

The year is about to wrap up for the Student Government Association, with a new slate to be announced next month.

Nominations for SGA slates and individual senate seats are due Monday at the Nomination Convention, held at 6 p.m. in the Pine Shelf Room of the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.

SGA President Beth Cahill encourages senators to advertise the election.

"This is the one time of year when almost everyone on campus knows about SGA," she said. "If you don't have a slate to support, support the vote."

Convention Board Chairman Matt Whitlock said when the new slate is approved, all senators lose their seats. During his committee report, he encouraged senators interested in returning to SGA to turn in applications Monday. Anyone is welcome to apply by contacting the Office of Student Life.

"We want to get more people in from the start so there aren't any empty seats," he said.

President pro tempore Nicole Akey initiated a new exercise early in the meeting, asking caucuses to write down ideas for each committee. She said ideas are supposed to be generated in caucus, and then committees carry out these ideas. But over time this idea became lost as committees tried to come up with ideas for the entire body.

"It helps facilitate communication between the caucuses and committees," she said. "Somewhere in student government ... everyone wanted to help."

In her role, Akey acts as a liaison between senators and the SGA executive board and assists senators in writing legislation.

Representing the Governmental Affairs and Student Awareness Committee, Whitlock said the legislation revisions discussed over the last few weeks will not be made before the new slate is elected. He said there's not enough time to get it done by Monday when the prospective slates will be announced.

Interfraternity Council was reinstated to SGA and Mark Mosias was approved as the representative. He said IFC was interested in being a member of SGA so they could stay informed of what the organization is doing and so fraternities can get more involved with SGA events.

The SGA meeting next week will take place at Art Museum Room 217. SGA Secretary Carson Lance said President Jo Ann Gora will be hosting a forum to discuss the budget cuts at 3 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Student Center Ballroom. Voting will take place online March 1 and 2. The Web site is still being determined.
