MEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Ball State's consecutive streak of getting votes in coaches poll ends

The streaks continue to break for the Ball State University men's volleyball team following a loss to Division II Quincy University during the weekend.

The Cardinals received zero votes in the newest top 15 coaches poll released Monday night — the first time in more than two years they received no votes in the poll.

Ball State (7-3, 2-3 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) lost to Quincy in four games Saturday to end its 21-match winning streak against the Hawks that stretched back to 2001. The victory was also Quincy's (3-5, 1-2 MIVA) first conference win since March 2008 and its fourth MIVA victory in the last four seasons.

The coaches poll is comprised of 16 voters, including Ball State coach Joel Walton. This is the first time Ball State has not received any votes since January 2008, when it started the season 0-4.

Ball State started the season No. 11 in the preseason poll, but fell out of the rankings following a season-opening loss the to Loyola University. Despite not being ranked, the Cardinals had continued to receive votes each week in the poll, including a then-season-low four votes in last week's poll.

Three MIVA teams were ranked in this week's poll.

Loyola received 64 votes — six more votes than last week — to stay at No. 12 after defeating Ohio State University on Saturday and remain the highest ranked team in the conference for the third consecutive week.

Even with the loss, the Buckeyes received 46 votes to break the tie with UC San Diego in last week's poll and are now in sole possession of the No. 13 ranking. Lewis University received 28 votes — the same amount of votes from last week's poll — and remain at No. 15.

Ball State's next match will be against No. 7 Penn State University at 7 p.m. Friday in University Park, Pa. The Nittany Lions jumped up two spots in this week's poll after winning two exhibition matches last week against Laval University, the top ranked Canadian men's volleyball team.
