MEN'S TENNIS: Ball State plays host to Green Bay, Anderson in doubleheader

Team hopes work on conditioning will pay off as tough stretch of schedule hits

The focus for the Ball State men's tennis team over the past couple weeks has been all about conditioning.

Over the next two weeks the team is playing six matches, including two doubleheaders, and coach Bill Richards will find out pretty quickly whether all the work has paid off.

Beginning today, the Cardinals welcome both the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Anderson University to Muncie. The first match starts at 1 p.m. at the Northwest YMCA Tennis Center.

"[Green Bay is] about as good as a middle of the pack Mid-American Conference team," Richards said. "We need to make sure we don't overlook them and play at a high level to get the job done."

Richards has put his team through some tough training to prepare his team for the road ahead.

"We had a really good, hard week of practice," Richards said. "We pushed hard and worked hard to establish our conditioning. Some guys may be going into this week a little fatigued, but that is good right now. That is kind of what I wanted so we could test them from a physical standpoint."

Even with so many matches in a short span, Richards isn't worried about the focus of his team.

"The more match play you have the easier it is to stay focused," Richards said. "It really isn't a matter of focus though. It is a matter of holding up physically."
