Blood drive in AJ parking lot set for today

The American Red Cross hopes to collect 35 pints of blood through a blood drive held on a "blood-mobile" Friday in the parking lot between the Art and Journalism Building and Teachers College.

Shelby Norris, communications specialist for the Red Cross Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region, said seven blood drives have been canceled during the past month due to weather in the region, which serves North and Central Indiana and seven counties in Northwest Ohio.

She said the Golden Key International Society had planned to have a blood drive Feb. 24, but because of all the cancellations, the Red Cross asked them to move the date up a couple weeks.

"They bent over backwards to make it happen," she said. "We really appreciate them for working with us."

Norris said having the blood drive in a mobile bus is just as safe as having it indoors.

"It's a contained unit, not outside in the elements," she said.

Norris said it's challenging to collect blood this time of year.

"It's always contingent upon the weather," she said.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
