Ball State planetarium to have new series about galaxies

A new series opens this semester for Ball State University's planetarium tonight.

The first program of the series, "Journey to the Center of the Milky Way," will show how the use of better technology has allowed us to learn more about our galaxy, Planetarium Director Ronald Kaitchuck said.

"The show is about our galaxy. For most of human history, we did not know it existed, but people have been taking steps and we have advanced technologically," he said.

During the 7 p.m. show, pictures of different parts of the galaxy will be displayed while Kaitchuck talks about these areas.

Although the top of the Cooper Physical Science Building is usually open for visits after the shows, Kaitchuck said the area will not be open this weekend due to the weather and snow accumulation around the equipment.

"Journey to the Center of the Milky Way" will be shown today, Saturday and next weekend as well. Other shows this semester will be "Galaxies," which will be narrated by science writer Timothy Ferris; "Going Deep," in which pictures taken from the Hubble Space telescope will be displayed; and "The Missing Universe," in which dark energy and matter will be explored.

Visitors are asked to go early in order to find a seat, Kaitchuck said.

When: Feb. 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 7 p.m.

Where: Cooper Science building
