Many are disappointed with the slate turn out for the 2010 Student Government Association Nominations Ceremony.
Only one slate will run during the 2010 election season. Student Connection, a slate consisting of three sophomores and one junior, will run unopposed.
"As of now we are looking at doing open campaigning," Cory Schneider, Elections Board chairman, said. "If there is just one slate that runs, they can be installed by two-thirds of Student Senate. We are considering that option, but as of right now this is not going to happen. As of now, everything is going to go along as usual."
Student Connection will have to go through at least one week of campaigning before the senate vote will be considered.
During this campaign season, Student Connection will not be able to use Blackboard or Gradebook to generate e-mails endorsing its campaign.
Despite the campaign stipulations, Matt Whitlock, Student Connection presidential nominee, believes there is still a choice among the student body despite the one-slate election.
"I think they are still going to be able to choose. It's not like we were in the Nomination Convention and then put into place," he said. "They are going to still have the ability, whether through student referendum or Student Senate vote. They are still going to have the voice to say whether we have the abilities to lead. I don't think the choice has been eliminated."
Although running unopposed, Student Connections is glad the nomination process is over.
"I couldn't sleep last night. I got up this morning put on my pump-up [play]list and got ready," Whitney Hamblin, vice presidential nominee, said. "To be working with three people who are just as driven as I am I feel really proud and blessed I get to work with these people."
During this process, Student Connections looks to build a bond with the student body as well as the Muncie community.
"We have broken up our platform into a few different points. The main thing is connections, whether that be with the Muncie community, campus, residents halls or multicultural organizations," Whitlock said.
Student Connection also wishes to promote the residential facilities.
"In the residence halls, something we are really excited about is encouraging hall councils to open up their facilities to more and larger events, hoping to showcase the beautiful facilities we have," Juliana Abercrombie, Student Connection secretary nominee, said.
