A Danielle Gratton heave with two defenders in her face missed the mark in overtime as Ball State University fell to the University Akron, 66-64, at Worthen Arena.
Junior guard Ty'Ronda Benning led the way for Ball State (9-11, 3-4 Mid-American Conference) with 17 points. Junior forward Emily Maggert had another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
For Akron (11-9, 5-2 MAC), Kyle Baumgartner had a game-high 19 points.
Akron hit 22-of-25 (88 percent) of its free throws in the game and out-rebounded Ball State 45-40. Both teams struggled to hang on to the ball on offense, as the Zips totaled 20 turnovers and the Cardinals tallied 21.
Ball State returns to action with a 2 p.m. tipoff Saturday at Ohio University.
