Each week, The Daily News' sports crew picks its PPQ - the play, player and quote of the week.
This week's best:
Player:
Billy Ebel, men's volleyball
The senior libero was named MIVA Defensive Player of the week for the second straight week, averaging 4.29 digs-per-game with a perfect 1.000 reception percentage in two Ball State wins. Ebel leads the MIVA with a 4.00 digs-per-game average.
Play:
Jauwan Scaife, men's basketball
The freshman guard made the play of his young Ball State career Tuesday night in the Cardinals' 65-59 double-overtime win over Miami. With the score tied at 58 with 44 seconds left in the second overtime, Scaife took the ball near the right elbow, got his man in the air on a pump fake, absorbed the foul and created an off-balance shot. The shot fell, and Scaife hit the ensuing free throw to preserve the win for the Cardinals.
Quote:
'I thought it was a hard-fought game, but they out-fought us. In the end, they were the men, we were the boys.' -- Miami University men's basketball coach Charlie Coles following the Cardinals' 65-59 double-overtime win over the RedHawks
Fan choice:
Anders Nelson, men's volleyball
With 25 votes and 63 percent of the vote, Nelson won this week's fan choice poll, edging out men's basketball's Malik Perry and gymnastics' Emily Wehrle, who had six votes each. Nelson, a junior, dominated the middle in Ball State's sweep of visiting Carthage College, collecting a match-best four blocks and a team-high .545 attack percentage in the win over the Red Men.
