INDIANAPOLIS — The Ball State University men's basketball team became No. 4 Purdue University's third Mid-American Conference victim of the season on Saturday as the Cardinals lost 69-49 at the annual John R. Wooden Tradition game at Conseco Fieldhouse.
"Obviously, Purdue is an excellent ballclub, they're not ranked No. 4 in the country by accident," Ball State coach Billy Taylor said. "They've got shooters, they've got athleticism, they've got physical guys in the post, and I thought our guys did a tremendous job in continuing to fight and battle and really showed a lot of resiliency, not getting down and just continuing to do what we were asking them to do."
Leading the way for Ball State (3-5) was sophomore center Jarrod Jones with 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward Terrence Watson (12 points) and freshman guard Jauwan Scaife (10) also reached double-digits for the Cardinals.
For Purdue (10-0), leaders of the Big Ten Conference, junior forward Robbie Hummel led the way with 19 points and nine rebounds. Junior center JaJuan Johnson had 16 points and eight rebounds, while junior guard E'Twaun Moore had 12 points.
Saturday's game marked the third time the Boilermakers have defeated a MAC school this season. Purdue has also defeated the University at Buffalo (101-65) and Central Michigan University (64-38) in games at West Lafayette's Mackey Arena.
The 10-0 start for the Boilermakers is their best start since the 1993-94 season.
The Cardinals return to action on Monday as they host North Carolina Central for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Worthen Arena.
