ANDERSON, Ind. — A proposal to consolidate Anderson's two high schools is drawing widespread opposition in the central Indiana city.
Hundreds of opponents jammed a School Board meeting Tuesday night, a week before the board is expected to vote on the plan.
Opponents said they worried about a single high school being more crowded, along with the potential loss of academic, athletic and extracurricular opportunities.
The board is considering whether to keep Anderson and Highland high schools open as grades 7-12 facilities or have one high school with grades 10-12.
Those supporting a single high school say it is a financial necessity as the district's enrollment has declined to about 9,200 students from 10,400 five years ago.
