Sorority raises more than $5,000 at gala

Alpha Phi sorority raised more than $5,000 at its first "Red Dress Gala" philanthropy event.

The Red Dress Gala took place Nov. 7 at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom. The money from this event was donated to the Alpha Phi Foundation, which supports cardiac care.

The Red Dress Gala included dinner, dancing and a silent auction. The parents who went to the dinner paid $50 for the dinner. Alpha Phi raised more than $3,000 with these donations.

The rest of the $5,000 was collected from the silent auction. Coca Cola, which was one of the sponsors for the event, sent baskets to be sold in the auction.

Cassandra Ryan, the philanthropy chair for the gala, said this was a new experience for her sorority.

"We wanted to try something different this year," she said.

The "Red Dress Gala" is done by Alpha Phi chapters nationwide.

Ball State's chapter plans to make this an annual philanthropy event, Ryan said. They want to get more parents and alumni to help donate money to their foundation and to bring people together.
