The roles have been reversed. Women act like men and men act like women as the improv comedy group Reflex partners with Busted Space Theatre Company to put on "Gender Flex: The Musical."
"You'll see anything from high-heel clad men shimmying through ‘Cell Block Tango' to a young ‘man' thrown off during the Putnam 25th annual Spelling Bee due to an ‘Unfortunate Erection,'" said Reflex member Cary Patterson.
Both groups decided to join forces in this musical endeavor after they found out they had scheduled their shows for the same time, Patterson said. Instead of fighting over the space and stealing each other's audiences, they decided to combine the talents of both group to create one twisted-up comedy performance, she said.
Gender Flex will combine the talents of both groups by featuring singing as well as performing improvisational comedy. The gender-reversed show contains songs from various musicals such as "High School Musical 2," "The Producers" and many others.
Before merging the two shows, Busted Space Theatre Company was intending to put on a "Gender Blender" show.
"We were discussing doing a cabaret and we thought it would be fun to give everyone a chance to sing songs that they normally don't get to sing," Busted Space representative Katie Mazzini said. "Guys are singing girl songs and girls are singing guy songs."
Reflex members will contribute to the show by improvising to the acts and performing as back-up dancers. There are also a few group numbers intermixed into the performance.
The show features all of the usual Reflex members and some Busted Space members but also includes several people from outside the two groups.
"The singers are a various group of people," Mazzini said. "Not all of them are musical theatre, which is making this really collaborative and fun."
