This is about the time of year when people have been pulling their hair out and grinding their teeth for a few weeks. There aren't enough hours in a day to eat, sleep, get work done and do whatever else needs to be done and the stress is building a skyscraper in our minds.
The Daily News is full of people who haven't slept for days; we certainly aren't alone. This time of year, sleep deprivation is as big a hindrance for college students as the flu season.
But we're two weeks away from Thanksgiving Break and five weeks away from final exams and the end of the semester. There's no reason to lose it now when we're so close to a short break and then a wonderful, magical three-week break, or, for some people, graduation.
Maybe a solution is to take a day off. It may not solve everything or anything at all. But if you're overworked and ready to break down, taking time off could help you relax and get ready for the final push of the semester.
Students need to prioritize. In some majors, the experience students get from extracurricular activities is more important than doing well in classes. Taking some emphasis off course work to get some sleep or unwind might be OK. On the other hand, classes may be more important than extracurricular activities. Responsible judgment should be used.
Other than that, all the normal remedies are as important as ever. Read a book, rot your brain with video games, play an instrument or exercise.
For those of us who have been through this before, we know the worst part of the semester is right before it's over. Freshmen might not find comfort in knowing that they haven't yet experienced the worst, but they knew the deal coming in.
The most important thing for students to remember is regardless of how hard the semester gets and how hopeless they may feel, it pays off.
So do what you need to do to prepare yourselves for the last stretch of this semester, whatever that may be, and do the best work you can.
