Kappa Delta to twist, tangle for charity

Students can play Twister to help raise money for the American Brain Tumor Association through the Kappa Delta sorority's sixth annual Twister Tournament.

The event is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in Irving Gym II. Kappa Delta president Meredith McCaskill said this philanthropic event is important to the sorority.

"We hold this close to our hearts because we had a former sister die from a brain tumor," McCaskill said.

Kappa Delta has been hosting the event since 2004 to help raise money for Lindsey Arnold's medical expenses. Arnold, a member of Kappa Delta, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2004 and died in 2005.

Kimberly Fox, the Twister Tournament chair, said this event is different than other greek events.

"I feel like this event is important to students because it is about a student who had an impact on the campus of Ball State University," Fox said.

Students can pre-register for the tournament. The participation costs $6 for an individual and $20 for a team of four. Students can watch the tournament for $1. Kappa Delta will have a table in the Atrium this week for students who want to pre-register for the tournament.

During the tournament, students will compete on three large Twister boards. There will be three rounds with two heats. The winners of each heat will then compete on a regular-sized board to see who will be crowned the Twister champion, Fox said.

Women from the Kappa Delta chapter will be selling "Twister dots" until the day of the tournament. These dots are $1. Students who purchase the dots have a chance of winning $200 in a raffle.

McCaskill said that through selling Twister dots and registration fees, Kappa Delta hopes to exceed the $969 raised from last year's Twister Tournament.

This year's theme is "Spotlight on the Stars." Kappa Delta encourages students to dress up as their favorite celebrity or famous figure. Gift cards to places, such as businesses in the Village, will be awarded to the overall individual winner, overall team winner and the best theme costume, among others.
