Frog Baby art exhibit a success

A group of elementary and middle school students had fun and learned a lot from decorating Frog Baby last week.

The group decorated Frog Baby on Nov. 7 and took the decorations down Saturday morning.

Ball State University student teacher Megan Chance said the students learned through the experience, including about artists Christo and Jeanne Claude.

"They learned about planning artwork in advance and how much work goes into something fairly large scale," she said. "That was one of the first things they learned about the process of learning art versus the final product."

The students planned for four weeks to put up the decorations. They used rope and stakes to tie green construction fabric to Frog Baby, Chance said. The students chose green fabric because frogs are green, she added.

Chance said the students enjoyed decorating Frog Baby.

"They were all working really well as a team," she said. "They were excited so they didn't think about anything other than actually doing it."

The weather didn't harm Frog Baby's decorations because the students used construction fabric, Chance said. Since it was windy the day they put the decorations up, they were able to gauge how to tie the decorations down to ensure the materials stayed in place.

Chance also said Ball State students didn't tamper with the design and said a sign she put up explaining the project concept helped ensure students didn't damage it.

"Some of the [Ball State] student reactions were ‘I thought they were closing the fountain down for the winter,' but it was still going so it made them think a little because it was fairly abstract," Chance said.

Chance said the overall experience was a success for her students.

"The time went well, the weather was perfect and the students learned and had a good time," she said. "It gave them an opportunity to participate in something bigger than themselves that people could see."
