SOCCER: Cards lose to Rockets in final second

The day after the Ball State University football team was stunned by the University of Toledo in the closing seconds for the game, the soccer team had a déj+â-á vu ending to their match.

The Rockets scored the game-winning goal with one second left in the match to win 4-3, stunning the Cardinals who once led the match 3-0.

"They wanted that last goal more than we wanted the game," coach Michael Lovett said. "That's all there really is to it."

The Cardinals tallied two early first half goals. Senior midfielder Megan Ridley scored on a cross from junior defender Kristina Anderson in the eighth minute. Two minutes later, junior forward Missy Gordon put in a shot from inside the 18-yard box that sailed over the hands of the Toledo goalkeeper.

Ball State added its third goal of the half when freshman midfielder Maggie Brown put in a goal off a cross from junior midfielder Jacki Eft.

After that goal, the Rockets dominated the rest of the match. Toledo scored a goal in the 41st minute to get momentum going into the half.

The second half saw the Rockets put up three goals, two coming from forward Ali Leak. The Cardinals were outshot in the second half 21-3 and allowed seven corner kicks.

"I wish I knew why we played so differently in the second half," Lovett said. "We played uninspired and unorganized."

The loss is the first at home for Ball State and drops the team to 2-2-0 in Mid-American Conference play.

To prepare for the games next weekend, Lovett said his team will work on an attitude adjustment this week in practice. Their next match is on Friday at MAC-leading Central Michigan University. No players were available for comment after the match.
