Ball State University students participating in Pi Beta Phi sorority's "Pi Fest" can expect just that from the event's festivities, which includes a pie-eating contest and a search for objects in a spaghetti-filled pool.
The sorority's second annual "Pi Fest" will be held Oct. 12 and 13. Registration is at 5:30 p.m. and events start at 6 p.m. on LaFollette Field. Other activities include a speed-reading competition and a three-legged race. At 5 p.m. Oct. 13, the event will continue with a euchre tournament in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Ballroom.
Event organizer Kristin Walsh said fraternities and sororities will be allowed to pair up for the competitions, which will "add a new dynamic."
All proceeds from Pi Fest will go toward the Pi Beta Phi Foundation, First Book and a local charity to be decided after the event. In the past, a portion of the proceeds was donated to the local animal shelter.
According to its Web site, First Book is a charity devoted to supplying underprivileged children with new books. The organization was founded in 1992. That first year, First Book gave away more than 12,000 books to children in the Washington, D.C. area. Now, First Book has delivered more than 65 million books to children in need across the United States and Canada.
"[Pi Fest] really helps impoverished children and literacy, which is something this sorority supports," Walsh said.
Walsh said due to pressure by intramural sports and other activities, Pi Beta Phi was not able to secure a gym for the activities they had planned: volleyball and basketball. However, she said, Pi Fest's improvised events should still be a lot of fun.
HistoryThis is the second year that Pi Beta Phi has hosted "Pi Fest." 2008The sorority donated $615.75 to Arrowmont School for Arts and Crafts and $1,847.25 to the Pi Beta Phi Foundation. In addition, the chapter also paired up with the Sigma Nu fraternity and donated $615.75 and toys to the Muncie Animal Shelter.
2009All proceeds from Pi Fest will be donated to Pi Beta Phi Foundation and First Book. The chapter will also donate a portion of the proceeds to a local charity.
