Ball State University parking garages now accept credit and debit card payment, Parking Services announced Wednesday.
Nancy Wray, Parking Services office manager, said the office decided to add the new option after they installed upgraded pay stations in the parking garages in late spring.
"[Students] could only use cash," Wray said. "We thought [adding the credit card option] was more convenient and useful for clients."
Wray said Parking Services had to work on getting agreements from credit card companies before making the payment option available. The new pay stations accept Mastercard, Visa and Discover credit cards.
Despite the easier payment method, Wray said most students prefer to park in the parking lots.
"It's cheaper to register the car for a year on one of the school's parking lots," she said. "You pay $1 for an hour and up to $5 for a day on parking garages."
No other changes have been made to the parking garages' restrictions, Wray said. Hours are still from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The university's three parking garages are located behind John R. Emens Auditorium, on McKinley Avenue behind Sursa Hall and behind the L.A. Pittenger Student Center.
Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for University Marketing and Communications, said the new pay-by-space parking system cost $187,049. The system is a revenue producer so it eventually pays for itself, he said.
