OUR VIEW: Judge not

AT ISSUE: Wait until all the facts are known before jumping to any conclusions about David Letterman as a person

By now you've probably heard some things about Ball State University's most famous alumnus David Letterman. But regardless of how you heard of those things, you don't know everything. There's probably only a small handful of people who do.

It's so easy to pass judgment when celebrities get caught with their pants down, and it's no different with Letterman. Things like this happen all the time. Even if every negative aspect of this story is true, he's human, just like us, and he makes mistakes. About 50 percent of marriages in the country end in divorce. Some of those are probably caused by some sort of indiscretion. While we certainly don't condone cheating, we don't care if Joe Blow has an affair with his secretary. But since Letterman is a public figure, some people are scrutinizing him.

Everyone has messed up or will sometime in their life. There is no reason to immediately vilify him when we don't know everything. He only told us as much as he needed to in order to defend himself.

Do we care how many affairs any other alumni had extramarital sex with? It may be none. It may be 10. We won't know unless something like this is made public again.

We won't know because they won't tell us - because it's none of our business. Just because Letterman reacted to the threats of an attempted extortion and made some details public doesn't make it our business. It's not like he wanted to point out all of his flaws on national TV. Nobody would.

At this point, the only judgment we can make is based on his interactions with us. His only tie to people in the Ball State community is his status as an alumnus and his donation to the university that helped construct the building named after him with all the professional quality equipment. He's a friend to the university, and we should respect his privacy.

Most of us are going make some sort of immediate judgment when things like this happen. Take some time to consider everything before making your final decision about him.
