OUR VIEW: Best of the month

AT ISSUE: Homecoming Week came and passed and while it was fun, it certainly wasn't overwhelmingly awesome

The bed frames are back in storage, Emens Auditorium will feature real performers once again and students are back to grind.

Homecoming Week 2009 is behind us, but was it the Best Week Ever? Some might say yes, others may disagree and some were probably too smashed to notice.

It was nice that Homecoming Week was moved up this year so it didn't have to compete with mid-term exams.

While Monday's bonfire (nonfire) didn't exactly go as planned, it turned out OK. Attendance was high and people seemed to have fun despite the lack of towering flames. The Homecoming Steering Committee did well to improvise to keep people happy. A backup plan for the future would be nice though. Inclement weather is always a possibility for outside events. Monday's bonfire could be a good place to bring back Music on McKinley.

The Student Scholarship Talent Search was fun. Air Jam sold out again. The inaugural flag football tournament went well, though the committee might reconsider having the fireworks follow. It might work better after the real football game. There was nothing extraordinary about these events. They operated smoothly and students seemed to enjoy them.

But the noon game time was awful. It forced the Homecoming Parade to be shorter and it didn't leave a lot of time for tailgating. Some students may have skipped both, opting instead to nurse their hangovers or sleep in. We understand scheduling the game at noon allowed it to be on ESPN Plus and maybe the university wanted to limit the amount of time we had for tailgating. But even a 3:30 p.m. kickoff time would've been better. National exposure for an 0-5 season may even be detrimental.

Speaking of football, the Cardinals lost a heartbreaker in the final minute. It seemed like the Benny Hill theme song should've been playing in the background during the one play the University of Toledo needed to regain the lead. While a win would've been a nice cap, the loss didn't do anything to diminish Homecoming Week. Like we said, this year it was back to normal.

We certainly don't believe the steering committee thought last week was going to be literally the best week ever. But it did have high expectations. Whether they were met is debatable. It definitely wasn't the best ever or maybe even the best of the semester. But either way, the steering committee did well to organize the week and a lot of people had good times.
