Homecoming Week advisor Kate Webber said attendance numbers for many of the events were consistent or higher than last year's, though final attendance tallies won't be available until today.
This year's Homecoming Steering Committee focused on reaching out to more students and getting more people involved in Homecoming activities, said senior Sheri Niekamp, chair of this year's Student Scholarship Talent Search. Webber said that attendance was up for the talent search this year.
"We made big strides this year in getting people involved," Niekamp said.
The steering committee did this through campus e-mails, advertising and promotional videos that were shown at meetings and posted on the Homecoming Web site.
Webber said attendance for Air Jam sold out Emens Auditorium and was about the same as last year. The crowd at Bed Races was about the same as last year, too.
The only event with lower attendance numbers than last year was Wednesday night's fireworks. Webber said the fireworks were moved off campus to Scheumann Stadium, which could have caused the drop in attendance.
And although this year's bonfire didn't go as planned, event organizers said they were happy with the outcome.
"Even though the bonfire had to be cancelled, seeing everyone dancing and having a good time gave us a good sense of community," Niekamp said.
This year's Homecoming Week premiered a co-ed flag football tournament. There aren't any attendance numbers to compare for this event, but General Chair Sam Adamczewski said she was happy with the level of participation.
"We just wanted to try something new and get students involved in a different way," she said.
Adamczewski added that the steering committee supported the flag football event because it encouraged crowd involvement in cheering the participating teams.
Webber said she doesn't know if Music on McKinley will be replaced by flag football again next year. She said each year's decisions are dictated by the committee.
Regardless of individual events, Adamczewski said the work put into Homecoming Week, which began in the early spring, was an overall success.
"Each day represented a different person's work and effort," she said.
