Get your NERF guns, zombies invade Ball State's campus

BSU students amass team members for Humans vs. Zombies

The humans used their last hours to raise an army even stronger than last year's before the week-long zombie apocalypse started at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

Humans vs. Zombies players were registering new zombies and humans Wednesday afternoon at the Scramble Light and Atrium to participate in their role-playing activity.

Game administrator Paul Starr said he saw a rush of people sign up during the last 24 hours before the game, which was part of HvZ's marketing strategy to get more last-minute joiners.

Starr said HvZ has seen a significant increase in participation this fall. He said he expects 250 participants - about 100 more than last year's roster - for this year's game.

Kelsey Meyers, a second-year HvZ player, said membership could be up because HvZ participants were out recruiting and training new members during Orientation Week and at the Activities Fair earlier in the semester.

"This year we definitely tried to get more of the new, like the freshmen, to play," she said.

Starr said in addition to freshmen, upperclassmen are now starting to reconsider their views on HvZ.

"There were people who two years ago were not thinking about playing Humans vs. Zombies, and now they are looking at Humans vs. Zombies again and maybe they are considering it," he said.

John Kershaw said he participates in HvZ because it is an excuse to run around campus shooting NERF guns.
