FOOTBALL: Reporter's notebook

WildcatThe Wildcat formation was back in Ball State University's playbook Saturday after its successful unveiling at Auburn University.

Running back Eric Williams carried the ball nine times for 43 yards in Ball State's 37-30 loss to the University of Toledo. Most of his rushes came after taking a direct snap from center.

Coach Stan Parrish said he expects to use the Wildcat more as the season goes on.

"We wanted to expand on it earlier in the season, but he was having trouble hanging on to the ball," Parrish said. "We've added one or two things to it every week. He's good. He can run, he can throw and he's obviously a really talented freshman player."

Williams led the Cardinals in rushing for the second straight game.

Injury updateWide receiver Jeremy Hill is still nursing his pulled hamstring.

The injury prevented the sophomore from playing in the second half last week and limited him again this week, Parrish said.

"Jeremy didn't practice this week," he said. "We were limited to about eight to ten snaps today."

Cornerback Brandon Carnagie injured his left knee at Auburn and did not play against Toledo.

Right guard Dan Mannick strained his left knee Saturday.

Going streaking Ball State's loss snapped a couple streaks.

The Cardinals had won three straight against the Rockets entering Saturday's game. Toledo's win ended its second longest losing streak in the series and evened the series at 17-17-1.

The Cardinals also had won 12 consecutive Mid-American Conference regular season games. The last time Ball State lost a MAC regular season contest was against Central Michigan University on Oct. 6, 2007.
