The University of Toledo scored on the opening drive of the game and took a 7-6 lead into the second quarter. Quarterback Aaron Opelt found wide receiver Eric Page for a 39-yard strike to complete the scoring drive, which lasted more than four minutes.
The Cardinals responded on their own opening drive with a 22-yard field goal from Ian McGarvey. Ball State reached Toledo's four-yard line with a 37-yard pass to wide receiver Dan Ifft. However, the Cardinals lost a yard on three plays and were forced to kick.
McGarvey knocked home a 47-yard field goal with 32 seconds left in the first quarter to bring the Cardinals within a point.
